Food for Thought - Pre Production - A little Introduction into Desserts
So what are desserts precisely?
Dessert is a typically sweet course that concludes an evening meal. The course usually consists of sweet foods, but may include other items. The term dessert does not necessarily mean that it can only be served after dinner. Depending on the culture itself, places such as Russia use many of their breakfast foods and serve the with honey and jam to make them popular as desserts.
What kind of desserts are there?
Throughout the world, there are a wide variety of desserts, including cakes, tarts, cookies, biscuits, gelatins, pastries, ice creams, pies, puddings, custards, sweet soups and candies. Fruit is also commonly found in dessert courses because of its natural sweetness.
Where did the term originate from?
The term originated from the French word desservir, meaning "to clean the table", and the negative of the Latin word servire.
In terms of Nutrition
Desserts are by definition a sweet course, so this usually means high content of sugar or fats. Desserts have historically been known as a smaller course to end a meal but in modern times they have actually become a more major part of people's diets. It is not surprising however to see people try to skip that last course, especially if they see it merely as a plate of sugar that will add to the fats that they are so desperately trying to burn off during their dieting periods.
There are healthier desserts however, such as fresh fruit cooked without sugars or extra fats. Dark chocolate, known to have a lower sugar content as compared to other kinds of chocolates, are popularly considered healthier because of their other nutritional content.
So... why do we have Desserts?
Because life is too short.
... well, there are some other reasons from what I can see in various articles that I looked up, but they are... kinda weird (Pft, soon enough they are going to say anything will make you better in bed...). But really, just enjoying your dessert will surely make you a happier and healthier person, skipping it won't really help when you are trying to lose weight, let's be honest here.
