Omelette (Madeline Sharafian)

Here is one more animation short, this time from Calarts student Madeline Sharafian!

This adorable short focuses on an incredibly intelligent (And of course faithful and loving) pet dog that skillfully aids his exhausted master in cooking a yummy dinner, preventing him from doing anything dangerous in his tired state to himself or to his food.

This animated short bears similarities to the Pixar film Ratatouille as both features culinarily talented animals as well as a french theme of sorts throughout (Subject matter, music, etc).

The short was nicely paced with a nice variety of compositions show throughout, and all scenes matched the tempo and rhythm of the catchy little song that plays throughout. I also really liked the warm color palette that was used, it really creates the desired mood.

The main theme of this video is pretty much food, as Madeline quoted "My family’s lives practically revolve around cooking for each other, so it’s a theme that I’m deeply attached to." but then again, I believe the short also focuses on the theme and saying (A personal favorite of mine): "A dog is a man's best friend."

Madeline Sharafian is a BFA animation student going through her third year in CalArts. She was also a Pixar Story intern and is presently a storyboard artist for Cartoon Network. It was during her second year that she worked on this animation that became such a viral hit online. Madeline is also notable for her cute, cartoony and vibrant art style, most of her illustrations tend to feature a framing element in them as show below:

It is a little tough figuring out whether the frames are drawn traditionally or digitally with a charcoal pencil textured brush, but like Guillaume Chartier, Madeline's short was pretty much animated traditionally, with hand drawn frames and digital coloring for a cleaner look. I believe that Madeline might have drawn the frames traditionally and scanned them in after, especially after reading one of the questions she had answered on her Tumblr about her preferences.

Speaking of Tumblr, you can check out her Tumblr and Blogger:
